To restore a Database to an alternate location, consider creating a Recovery Database. Once the database files have been restore and the Recovery Database has been mounted it can then be used to extract information (mailboxes or messages) for other use in Exchagne 2010. The creating of the Recovery Database and the extraction or manipulation of email is accomplished using the Exchange Management Shell (EMS).
Below is the process for restoring to a Recovery Database.
For detailed information regarding Recovery Databases and other available EMS commands and options please refer to:
- Open the EMS from your Start menu > All Programs > Microsoft Exchange Server > Exchange Management Shell. We recommend you right click and run the EMS as an Administrator
- Wait a moment for it to expand and give you a command prompt
- To create a simple Recovery Database run a command similar to:
- New-MailboxDatabase -Recovery -Name RDB1 -Server SERVERNAME
- NOTE: If space is restricted or you need to restore the database to a different location, see the example shown in the Microsoft article linked above.
- Restore the Exchange database and log files to the Database Path of wherever you created the Recovery Database
- To find the location of the Database Path:
- Look in the Exchange Management Console (EMC) under the Organization Configruation > Mailbox
- This should display the newly created Recovery Database (if not, refresh your view)
- Right click and look at the properties of the Recovery Database, it will display the Database path
- NOTE: You'll need to move the actual log files and the .edb file to this location
- In the EMC, mount the Recovery Database
- At this point, you will be able to run any number of EMS commands to recover whole mailboxes or specific messages with a variety of options. Refer to the Microsoft article linked above.
Once you have completed all the needed restore procedures, we recommend deleting the Recovery Database before continuing with regular backups
